Banner To Remember The Officers and Men of the
            XIth Parachute Battalion 1944
Welcome To Remember The XIth

During World War 2, many men performed great feats of bravery to allow us the freedoms we enjoy today.
One of these brave groups of men was the 11th Battalion The Parachute Regiment, who fought as a unit between March 1943 and November 1944.
During this relatively short period of time, the members of the battalion became an elite fighting force whose impact extended far beyond their time together. The officers and men fought alongside each other in the Battle of Arnhem against overwhelming odds, sustaining unimaginable losses. However, they brought hope to the people living in around the city of Arnhem, Netherlands.
The 11th Parachute Battalion did not fight alone, they fought alongside their sister battalions, 10th Parachute Battalion and 156th Parachute Battalion, collectively forming The 4th Parachute Brigade whose monument can be seen in the village of Knossington. The memorials to the 10th and 156th Parachute Battalions can be visited at Burrough and St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray respectively.
In many ways the 11th Parachute Battalion has been forgotten. However, we believe their story is too important to ignore and have launched an exciting new project "Remember The XIth" (RTXI).
RTXI is a Community Interest Company formed by the following group of 4 people, whose story you can learn about here:

  • Lieutenant Colonel (ret) Gerrit Pijpers OBE;
  • Doctor Jan Larder-Davis;
  • Mrs Johanna Pijpers;
  • Mr William Davis.

Gerrit and Jan have the closest links with the 11th Parachute Battalion; Gerrit having been a keen supporter and author of "Arnhem Their Final Battle" and Jan being the daughter of the last known survivor of the 11th Parachute Battalion, William (Bill) Larder whose story inspired Jan to carry out her doctoral research and to launch this project.
